I would walk around and jump from rock to rock as my Dad fished for Stealhead in the Columbia, as it wound it's way around through apple country in Washington State. I saw lots of little cute things a 7 year old would love in the water.
And I almost fell over back wards with excitement calling my Dad when I came across what looked like a 7 foot red fish just about 3 feet in front of me.
Salmon country - the Grand Coolie Damn had a Salmon ladder. I didn't like climbing ladders in those days - and I couldn't figure out at the time why a fish would want to either - but they sure did...
If you've never seen the power of huge jumping Salmon up those ladders...well, it is extraordinary.
I was raised on Salmon, fillets, steaks, stews, canned by mother at the cannery with clams we caught, every way you can think of. But one way is my favorite - Indian made Salmon jerky.
I really don't like much fish these days anyway.
Salmon is the craze now- I think McDonnalds will carry it soon -- :-)
But having had fresh caught Salmon from the Alaskan waters as my cousins came back in their commercial fishing boats after trading with the Russian boats during the cold war, most Salmon just doesn't taste very good to me...
I discovered these Native Americans from the North Coast who import this into Dallas, and many learned from them about the industry today. Farm raised or Atlantic Salmon means poor quality fish - save WholeFoods has a special farm method for theirs that's reported OK, so they say in Santa Fe. Their interview is very interesting.
If you want to stay local - don't eat Salmon as they don't swim in Dallas, TX nor in Santa Fe, NM.
But the are good flown in fresh...
